2020 Election By: Mason Munier

November 3, 2020 is just around the corner. The presidential election this year might just be the most important election in American history.

Our president, Donald J Trump, wasn't always interested in politics. He was originally a businessman. By being a businessman and real estate developer he owned several hotels, casinos, golf courses, resorts, and residential properties in New York City and all around the world. Trump was noticing the issues within our country such as illegal immigration, offshoring of American jobs, the U.S. national debt, and Islamic terrorism and he decided to do something about it. He made the decision to run for president in 2016 in hopes he could "Make America Great Again."

Joseph R Biden is an American politician and a member of the Democratic party. He is 77 years old and was born in Scranton Pennsylvania. He served as the United States vice president in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2017. This year he is running against Donald Trump in hopes of getting elected as president so he can make the changes necessary to help improve our country.

Below are 7 controversial topics and where Trump and Biden Stand on the issues.

Trump

Biden

Health Care

Trump and his administration fight to repeal the Affordable Care Act. He is still "going to make sure that any American with a preexisting condition continues to have coverage."

Joe Biden's plan is to protect the Affordable Care Act and "build on the Affordable Care Act by giving Americans more choice, reducing health care costs, and making our health care system less complex to navigate."

Taxes

While the economy struggles to recover Trump will not raise taxes. Trump uses his "2017 tax cuts as an example of his approach to stimulating economic growth."

Biden wants to raise the national minimum wage to $15.00 an hour. His plan is to "reverse some of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts."

Immigration

During Trump's time in office he "has made many immigration changes to address illegal immigrant caravans, terrorist travel to the U.S., asylum fraud, and more" in hopes of protecting our country.

Biden wants to "roll back changes made to both legal and illegal immigration during the Trump Administration." If Biden becomes President American's should "expect a return to many Obama-era immigration policies."

Gun Control

Trump doesn't believe in extremely strict gun laws however, "Trump expressed an openness to expanding background checks and so-called red flag laws that allow the government to take guns away from a person deemed to be at higher risk of committing violence."

Joe Biden wants to have stricter guns laws when it comes to purchasing and ownership. He believes "the constraints will help prevent mass shootings and drive down more everyday gun violence."

Abortion

Trump is pro-life and he said, "we are making it harder to get an abortion now, want to overturn federal protections and would support a near-total ban."

Biden is pro-choice and he said "we will protect a woman's right to choose and fight to keep access to abortion legal."

Economy

President Trump and other governors across the country have been making plans to reopen the economy. Trump says,"To preserve the health of Americans, we must preserve the health of our economy" showing that this move will get our country back on track.

Biden wants to focus on the virus before reopening the economy. He wants to "use all available authorities, including the Defense Production Act to turn the tide on this epidemic."

Police Reform

Trump wants full support for increased police rights and protections, increased penalties for certain crimes, and end cashless bail. Trump signed an executive order that "does not completely ban the use of choke holds by police. Instead, it restricts it "except in those situations where the use of deadly force is allowed by law." He also calls for "increasing penalties for anyone who assaults a police officer" and "for continuing to require people charged with crimes to pay bail or remain locked up until their trial."

Biden wants to cut down on rates of incarceration, further government oversight of local police and prosecutors, and increase the rights and resources for formerly incarcerated people. If elected Biden will, "push the Justice Department to investigate police and prosecutors across the country for questionable actions and misconduct and will create a separate task force on prosecutorial discretion to combat discrimination."

October and November are always a very hectic time of year when the election comes around. These months are full of debates, campaigning, and voting. The voting is left up to the adults since the voting age is 18. However, teenagers also have their opinions. I asked a group of high schoolers who they could vote for if they were over the age of 18 eligible to vote. Out of the 62 students that answered, 76% of the votes went to Trump and the other 24% of the votes went to Biden. This information may seem useless because the participants in this survey were under 18. Although these teenagers aren't able to vote yet, these votes will matter in just a few years. Our government can change very easily as new generations are able to vote. The future of our country is in the hands of our younger generations.
