Heroes in Today's Society By: Miranda Smith

When I was younger, I dreamed of being a superhero. I wanted to be able to throw out shields and become invisible like Violet from The Incredibles, swing from buildings like Spider man, or fly around the sky in my very own Iron Man suit. I'm sure I wasn't the only one striving to be as awesome as these superheros shown on the big screen. As little kids, when one says the word hero, that's the first thing that comes to their mind. A person with some kick ass powers who always manages to come and save the day. Now that I'm a bit older, the definition of a hero is quite different. Even though it would be totally awesome to have powers and to defeat other powerful villains, I strive to be a different type of hero.

One of biggest type of heroes in today's society are health care workers. They get up everyday, and put their life at risk, to save someone else's. Especially during this Covid-19 crisis we are facing right now. This unknown disease is killing thousands of people, yet these people still get up everyday and work for hours. Not only do they put themselves at risk, but the family and people they live with. This job is such an important one, and even though they don't have special powers, they are true heroes.

Another group of heroes I look up to in today's society are people in the military. They leave their homes, leave their families, leave their loved ones, to go fight for our country. It's a dangerous job, but without them, things could be a lot different.

Another less known group of heroes in society are social media influencers. These people can vary in what they talk about and who they influence, but a lot of them can have a very positive impact on people. Some help women feel more confident about their body and break stereotypes, others speak out politically and use their voice, others speak out humanly and leave a mark on what needs to change and how we can change it. These types of heroes may not seem important to some, but for others, they can truly change their life.

One lass group of heroes I'll talk about are family and friends. These types of heroes can leave such a major impact on our lives. Parents are there to help you through life, give you tips, and to love you no matter what. If you have these heroes in your life, go give them a big hug because whether you realize it or not, they truly impact your life. Friends are people who are always there for you to talk to, to cry on, or even just to talk to. Without them, life would be a lot different.

There are so many more heroes that we could talk about, but they are different for everyone. Think about people who have a positive impact on you, who have a positive impact on the world. Acknowledged them, because without them, things would be a lot different in today's society.

  1. I found it really relatable when you brought up what heroes meant to you as a child in contrast to now. I also liked how you recognized so many modern heroes who definitely deserve many thanks for what they do!
