The 5th Wave Searching for the Truth Book Review By: Kelly Groome

Summary:
The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey follows the story of Cassie Sullivan who was a normal 16-year-old girl. Navigating school and boy problems, until one day when she and the rest of the world's lives are turned upside down. Aliens or as the humans call them, the ¨Others¨, invade the earth killing 7 billion people through a series of waves. The first wave was when the Others killed all electricity. The second was giant tsunamis that flooding coasts all around the world. The third was a ¨blood plague¨ that wiped out 97% of the population. The fourth wave is the invasion of the aliens where they are able to disguise themselves as humans to trick those on Earth. Cassie manages to survive each wave, however, both her father and mother are victims of the third and fourth waves. Her little brother named Sammy has been kidnapped by the Aliens and Cassie goes on a journey to save him. Along the way, she meets a boy named Evan Walker who assists her in her journey to find her little brother. The book takes the reader through Cassis's journey to rescue her brother and the mystery of the fifth and final wave.

My Opinion:
I definitely enjoyed this book because I am a big fan of dystopian novels. I like how the book was a balance between an action and a romance book. It was very captivating which made it hard to put the book down. My favorite part about the book was how the author Rick Yancy used flashbacks in the beginning to different parts of Cassie's life before the alien invasion. It allowed the reader to get an understanding of how much Cassie's life changed and how she was really one of the only people left. I would say it wasn't as good as other dystopian novels I've read such as The Hunger Games or Divergent but was still an interesting read. Therefore I would give it a 4 out of 5 only because some parts were a little slow.
How it Relates to Searching for the Truth:
Throughout the story, there are many examples of searching for the truth. One example is when Cassie is searching for where her brother is and the truth about what the fifth wave really is. Another example is Cassie's questioning of whether her sidekick Evan Walker is being truthful about his identity which is finally revealed in the end.

Overall the book is definitely worth the read and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys dystopian series.
