What Songwriting Has Done For Me By: Ella Simmons

Just a few weeks ago, it wouldn't even cross my mind that I could write a song by myself. That was, until an idea came to my head at around midnight one day, and I had to start writing some lyrics. The basic tune of my original was put together the next day in about an hour of recording Snapchat videos and saving them in order to create a vague idea of the verses. The most difficult and frustrating part was trying to figure out the piano chords; this took about 30 minutes to an hour of sometimes (quite literally) staring at the piano to try and figure out something. And yes, just like those dramatic scenes in the movies, I have put my head and arms down on the piano to create a not-so-lovely chord progression when trying to figure out what to do. After a couple days of work and another week of cleaning and tweaking, I had finally put something together. I am so happy with the results, and I'm hoping to record it in the next month or so and maybe add in more instruments to go with the vocals and piano. 

With the world being so crazy right now, songwriting is a perfect outlet that I can turn to when I'm feeling anxious or stressed. Writing music has helped me cope with all the uncertainty that's in the world right now- it is something that makes me so happy and it certainly helps to grow my knowledge of music itself. I'm so excited to continue working on this song, and I'm really hoping to eventually publish it even if it's just on social media. So when your scrolling through Instagram during the next few weeks, keep and eye out for a new song and maybe it'll be mine!
