The Misrepresentation of Anime By: Jack Nauta

I watch anime all of the time. Some people may think it is weird because of how it is represented, whether it is the community, or watching animation instead of real people, or watching a show in another language. Yes, there are many people in the anime community who are very into it and even try to dress up as characters or do things that characters do in the show and this can come across as cringy and weird to some people. Me personally I don't do any of these things, because they don't really interest me. Anime has tons of different genres just like regular television shows do. There's action anime, which has a ton of fighting and there are power systems that make the characters strong and do crazy things. There are surprisingly romance animes that a ton of people love to watch and even make people cry. There are comedies and a slice of life shows, where it is a character's everyday life in Japan. There are supernatural and fantasy shows where characters go into alternate universes or it is earth 100s of years in the future. All of these shows are very unique and different with fantastic writing.

My personal favorite show is One Piece. It is about a kid named Monkey D. Luffy who lives in a world full of pirates and marines. His goal is to become the king of pirates and there has only been one before in history. On the surface, this may seem like a boring kid show that is just plain, but in reality, this is an ongoing show with over 950 episodes. It has thousands of characters, thousands of islands, tons of obstacles for the character to overcome as a character and a fighter, deaths of some of your favorite characters, and a bunch of unanswered questions that draw you to continue to keep watching the show. This is just one of the thousands of shows. If you aren't into fighting there is another show called Death Note which is a psychological battle between Light and L. Light is a genius high school student who one day came across this notebook where you can write someone's name in it and imagine their face and they will die. Light thought he would bring it upon himself and kill thousands of criminals who should be convicted, but wasn't or even inmates too. L is this teenage genius detective who has solved every case and throughout the whole series they have these battles and they show you how smart these characters are. Another show that I really enjoyed was a show called Astra Lost In Space. This is a very short show about these 9 kids who go on a field trip in space because of the advanced civilization they live in. They get sucked into a black hole and are pulled out thousands of light-years away from their planet. This is another show like One Piece, where on the surface it may seem like a fairly simple show, but in reality, it is very unique and different.

Then there is the animation, for me, this is what makes me like anime more than regular tv shows. This makes action animes way better than real-life action shows because the characters can do things that people can't. This makes the fighting, choreography, abilities, all look ten times better because the animators can draw out exactly what they want to see. This can also bring out beautiful images that are almost jaw-dropping to see. The animation is what makes anime better in my opinion and it should be something that draws you towards these shows not push you away. For the topic of watching the shows in Japanese, this is very easy to overcome because while you read the subtitles and watch the show, it becomes natural and you don't even realize you're doing it. You can also watch the shows in English, but I recommend Japanese because the voice actors are better. I hope I convinced you to watch anime and if I did I will put some clips of animation and fights I like below and shows I recommend to watch.

Action or Adventure: One Piece, Attack on Titan, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter

All of these shows except for Attack on Titan have comedy involved too

Political: Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Thriller: Promised Neverlands, Astra Lost In Space
