My Love of "Newsies the Original Broadway Musical" By Ella Simmons

Musical theater is one of my absolute favorite things; I love the concept of music, acting, and dance all in one aspect of entertainment. My favorite musicals are Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, and my number one is Newsies. It is a story about a group of young boys in the late 1800's who sell newspapers in order to survive. They are treated poorly, and when the prices are raised on the newspapers they must buy in order to sell, leader Jack Kelly has the bravery to step up and lead a NYC-wide strike (as represented in one of the musical's most famous songs - "Seize the Day").

Newsies the Musical is based on the movie from the 90's which was also called Newsies. The first time I watched the movie I didn't really like it, so I assumed I wouldn't like the musical either. Little did I know, I was very wrong. Although both have the same story line and consist of most of the same songs, I like the musical much better. I'm not exactly sure why; possibly because of the specific actors in the original musical who I love so much. It could also be because of an added character in the musical that isn't in the original movie. The new character is a reporter who supports the boy's strike and gives them publicity (she goes by the name of Katherine who is played by actress Kara Lindsay). I think the new character adds a lot of volume/diversity to the story as opposed to the movie which doesn't include her. She is also the love interest of Jack Kelly, and that adds another interesting layer to the overall story line of the musical.

There are a few reasons why I obsess over this musical so much:

1. I will always love the music - each song is so different but equally as amazing as the last.

2. The dancing is like no other musical I've seen - it is so unique, clean, and advanced.

3. I love all of the actors in the original cast - I've never actually seen this musical live, but I have watched it on Disney+ and I love it more every time I see it.

Musicals aren't for everyone, but if you like good music, acting, and dancing... you won't want to miss this one!
