The Munier Family's Chickens By: Rylee Munier

When Covid first started, me and my family were home together all the time. My dad realized we had a lot of free time on our hands and wanted to do something to take up that time. He came up with a great idea. "Lets get chickens!"

Me, my dad, and my sisters spent weeks building a coop. We had to go to stores to get all the supplies and then we helped him make it. A lot of hard work and calculations went into making the coop. We got all the wood together and somehow made it into a chicken coop. Then, it was time to paint it. This was my favorite part. We got red paint for the sides and white paint for the trim. It took us all day to paint the coop, but it came out really good.

Now that we had the coop, it was time to get the chickens. My dad drove a few hours away to get the chickens. He came home and surprised us with them. We had no idea that was the day he was getting our 10 chickens. He pulled up the driveway and had chickens in the back of his truck. At first, they all huddled around each other. But soon, they got used to their new home. Then they got more comfortable and started exploring. They roamed all around our yard. It took our dog, Pepper a while to get used to them too. He liked to follow them around and when they would fly away he chased after them.

Avery, my little sister, was so excited to name all 10 chickens. She had a whole list of names already picked out. She wanted to name them Maria, Big Betty, Nugget, Daisy, Summer, Richie, and Egg Claire.  Even though all the chickens looked the same to me, she could tell the difference between them and remembered each of their names.

My mom was not too big on the idea of betting chickens. Once we started getting eggs every morning though, she quickly changed her mind. We get between 7 and 9 eggs every day. They are the best eggs I have ever had. Some people may not be able to tell the difference between our eggs and store bought eggs, but I definitely can.

When quarantine started, It didn't seem like many good things would come from it. But, building the coop and getting the chickens kept me and my family occupied and we got to spend quality time with each other. We not have 10 chickens and I am so happy we got them!
